My students are engaging with rich, complex text through structured and interactive discussions with peers that require them to think on a deep, critical and analytical level. Not only are they considering how point of view shapes the meaning and tone of a text, but they are also experimenting with how manipulating point of view influences and transforms their understanding of the words and interactions that occur throughout the course of a text. The transformational shifts in the English Language Arts Standards provide opportunity on a minute-by-minute basis for my kids to engage with authentic, layered text through evidence-based analysis, strategic and comprehensive vocabulary development and hands-on, practical application of real world skills. Seen in this piece of student work, are examples of not only the kind of text we are using, but also the kind of thinking that 5th grade students are capable of under the Common Core State
